The Good Apples team are no stranger to a bit of crafting and have long harped on about the benefits of getting creative in your spare time. Our Merry Knitmas event with Knit Aid last Thursday was a truly special evening that proves just how valuable this age old hobby can be.

Knit Aid is a social enterprise that connects knitters with those in need of warmth and compassion. Founded by Shahnaz Ahmed in response to the refugee crisis in Europe, Knit Aid collect and send handmade knitted donations to refugees stuck in camps across Europe living in cold and harsh conditions.

They started sending donations to Calais in 2015 but have extended their distribution to Dunkirk, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria, distributing over 10,000 knitted garments to people who have lost everything they own, each knitted donation including a personal message from the creator.

We transformed the lounge at the Trampery Republic into a festive grotto of Christmassy tunes, sparkly lights and nattered along with old friends and new while consuming mince pies and mulled wine. Shahnaz and co-director Karen then told the powerful story of Knit Aid and what these donated gifts mean to the many people who receive them, as needles clicked in the background. Everyone was keen to get their knitted snoods finished in time to hand them over with their hand written message and at the end of the evening, Knit Aid received the most finished items in any workshop they’ve done 🙂 Thank you knitters!

It was a very special evening that we won’t be forgetting in a hurry and a great way to finish up an eventful year. We want to thank The Trampery Republic for hosting the event for free, and Wool and the Gang, Thraedable, Wyatt & Jack, Juta Shoes and Hard Yard London for donating their fabulous raffle prizes, which raised an additional £125 for Knit Aid.

If you want to find out more about Knit Aid, or send them your own knitted donation, have a look at their website here. Or sign up to notifications for their glamping retreat next summer. You can also buy unique Knit Aid branded products, the sale of which supports their important work.

For everyone who attended, THANK YOU. We had a fantastic time and we hope you did too!
